As defined by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN), secondary traumatic stress is the, “emotional duress that results when an individual hears about the firsthand trauma experiences of another” (Peterson, 2018). Behavioral health providers are at an increased risk for developing secondary traumatic stress from the necessary act of listening to traumatic and stressful stories on a day-to-day basis. Secondary traumatic stress has been identified as a contributor to burnout,  a complex issue resulting from chronic workplace stress that has physical and emotional consequences (Shoji et al.).  In this workshop, providers will be able to identify and discuss factors leading to secondary traumatic stress and burnout, discuss ways of coping, and identify resources for ongoing support.
