Encompassing the time during pregnancy and up to two years after birth, the perinatal period is an exceptionally sensitive period in a new mother’s life. A study conducted by the CDC finds that about 1 in 8 people experience postpartum depression and over half were not treated for it (Bauman et al.). Some individuals may experience postpartum psychosis, a serious mental illness that can include delusions and paranoia (NIMH, 2023). This workshop will provide insight into mental health concerns during the perinatal period, best-practices for providing support, and resources for ongoing support.
